The paper gives a detailed description of the structure and the method of execution of the tailings dam at the Elatzite Copper Mining Plant, built after the downstream construction method by hydrocycloning. The tailings dam was designed to reach an ultimate height of 145 m, and in June 1989 it was 95 m high. Lessons and conclusions are drawn on the basis of 8 years of operation, concerning the design, construction and operation of this type of tailings dams.
