The detailed exploration drilling of the Escondida Porphyry Copper Deposit commenced on June 1981, three months after the discovery. The project-to-date total of 38,390 m of rotary drilling and 98,270 m of diamond drilling was mainly completed between 1981 and 1983. An intense rotary drilling program originating from the discovery hole (RDH-6) rapidly defined the limits of the deposit. Drilling was also completed to intersect the proposed bulk sampling drift location and to determine non mineralized areas for the plant site and waste dumps tailings disposal.
